The Yeager's 2004 E-Z-GO TXT
E-Z-GP TXTGolf at the back of our property south of Trenton.
Introduction
The signs have been there for years and yet we have allowed ourselves to be come increasingly dependent on foreign oil. The automotive industry has not marketed small fuel efficient vehicles in the US and the average southerner at least has continued to purchase large vehicles and set up residence several miles from their place of work or business. The development of renewable energy sources for vehicular travel has been met with a collective yawn.
Beginning in 2007 OPEC and the oil companies really began putting the screws on the United States. Fuel pricing began to rise astronomically and petroleum companies posted record profits. Fuel prices of course began to effect many sectors of the economy. People began to travel less and give serious thought to not commuting long distances to work just to live in the country.
The out come of this is yet to be decided. Technology will likely come to our "rescue". In the mean time perhaps some good may come of this in that folks may associate more with neighbors. Telecommuting may increase and small towns again become centers of local culture and life.
At the Yeager house $4.00 a gallon fuel pricing even made our short half mile commute to the high school became expensive. We started looking for a used electric golf car as they are inexpensive to operate and electric motors aren't "bothered" by short trips nearly as much as an internal combustion engine. I found a surprisingly clean example of a 2004 E-Z-GO TXT (The TXT is the number-one selling golf car in the world according to Textron) with the original batteries.
After contacting the Texas Department of Public Safety I found out that lighting for night driving and a slow moving vehicle symbol was all that was needed to go back and forth from home to the High School. We purchased all the items we needed for "road going" safety and a rear seat kit from Buggies Unlimited which offers great technical support and friendly order staff. After a couple of false starts the modifications and additions went together rather well.
The buggy has been used for commuting, "puttering" around the Trenton High Meadows subdivision, and hauling a variety of supplies and equipment around our property.

The rear mud-flaps are fabricated using cut down Groboski Highland Duraflex 18" x 12" Splash Guards (or any suitable flat mud-flap) and a Simpson Strong-Tie A311 Angle Bracket as a support attached to the E-Z-GO frame. Predrilled holes were used where applicable and added where needed. Hex headed self tapping bolts were used as fasteners.
